My Most Anticipated Cozy Mystery Releases in 2023

If you ask me, 2023 is going to be another great year for reading. I've been perusing Amazon, Goodreads, and Instagram to find new releases that I'm excited for in the upcoming months. Here are some of the cozy mysteries that I'm looking forward to this year.

1. Board to Death by CJ Connor

August 22, 2023

I've been following CJ on instagram for a while and I am so excited for the release of Board to Death. It's about Ben Rosencrantz, who is currently running his family's board game shop and cafe while he takes care of his aging father. Divorced and working in his family's store isn't exactly where he thought he would be at this point in his life, but he's trying to make the best of it.

When a local toy and game collector offers him a great deal on a vintage board game, Ben knows it's too good to be true and turns the offer down. But the collector turns up dead, and Ben seems to be the only one who benefitted from the murder. Can Ben and Ezra (who works at the flower shop down the street) clear Ben's name, or will his reputation (and store) be ruined?

The plot and setting of this story sound so interesting creative. I'm sure this will be the first book in a new cozy mystery series. :)

2. A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales

June 27, 2023

Beatrice Steele isn't what you would think of when you hear the phrase "true lady". She doesn't possess any of the traits a man looks for in a wife. She loves to read about true crime in the newspaper. But she decides to try and put her true passions aside in hopes of finding a husband.

While at a ball one evening, the gentleman that she has her eyes on drops dead in the middle of the dance floor. It's up to Beatrice to investigate and get to the bottom of things. Not only because she's curious, but to try and protect everyone else around her from the possible murderer.

3. Flat White Fatality by Emmeline Duncan

May 23, 2023

This is book #3 in the Ground Rules Mystery series, a cozy mystery series that takes place at Ground Rules Coffee Roastery in Portland Oregon. The main character Sage is the owner of the Coffee Roastery but she also helps out at her boyfriend's gaming company. When one of his programmers is murdered, she must help get to the bottom of things before it's too late.

This sounds interesting because there are two businesses at stake! I have some friends who I think are preparing to read the first book in this series (or they at least were planning to read it), so I might try to read the first two book in this series before getting to this one.

4. Murder on Mustang Beach by Alicia Bessette

May 16, 2023

This mystery caught my attention because it takes place at the Outer Banks. I had my first Outer Banks trip last Summer and it was incredible. I can't wait to go back. Anyway, this is book #2 in the Outer Bank Bookshop Mystery series. Callie Padget is a bookseller and also an amateur sleuth. When a newlywed is murdered on the island, she must use information that she learns from one of her customers to help solve the mystery.

This one sounds really interesting because of the setting. It sounds like there is mention of the wild horses in NC and that's really fun. It sounds like this is an interesting series.

5.  by Olivia Matthews

January 24, 2023

I love the sound of this one so much! The main character is named Lyndsay Murray and she's just opened a bakery with her family. Although hers sounds like it is unique, a nearby bakery owner isn't too pleased with the competition and threatens to have them shut down. Well, Lyndsay isn't have any of that. She tells that neighbor where to go. The only problem is that they are found dead not too long after, so it will take all that she's got for Lyndsay to clear her name.

6. Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q Sutanto

March 14, 2023

Vera Wong is an elderly woman who lives in San Francisco. She lives above her tea shop in Chinatown. Her shop isn't all that busy, and in her free time she enjoys indulging in tea and doing some mild internet stalking of her son.

One day she goes downstairs and finds a dead man in her shop. He's holding a flash drive in his hand so Vera takes it and decides to to do a little bit of investigaing on her own. She's sure that she'll be able to figure out who the murderer is faster than the policy. All she has to to is watch her customers and patrons, and wait.

This sounds like such an interesting premise and I really hope it's the first book in what becomes a series. I love a nosy busybody type character and it sounds like Vera Wong might be a new favorite for me.

7. Six Sweets Under by Sarah Fox

February 7, 2023

I'm starting to realize that culinary cozies are one of my favorite sub categories! This one is about a woman named Becca Ransom who moves from California to Vermont, where she's making a career change from working in Hollywood to working in a chocolate shop that is owned by her grandparents.

Every year the town has an annual gondola races event, but this year a man named Archie Smith is trying to cause trouble. When something happens to Archie and Becca's grandfather is linked to the crime, she has to work to clear his name and find the true killer.

I love a story where there are cute grandparent characters and Becca's grandparents are named Lolly and Pop. Adorable!

8. Rehearsed to Death by Frank Anthony Polito

May 23, 2023

I recently read Renovated to Death by this author and really liked it, so I'm looking forward to checking out book 2 in this series. Our main characters are PJ and JP, a gay couple who host a reality show called Domestic Partners, where they help a customer remodel their home and document the process for the show.

But in the previous book, it was revealed that PJ  (who is also a mystery writer) wrote a play. He shared it with one of his neighbors who decided that the community theater in their Detroit suburb should put it on. So PJ is involved because he wrote the scripts, while JP is the star of the show. When something happens to their director, it is up to amateur sleuths PJ and JP to solve the crime and save the show.

I recommend this series if you like fun characters and dogs! The main characters adopted a rescue dog in the last book and it just warmed my heart because I love dogs. Haha.

9. Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust by Mindy Quigley

April 25, 2023

This is book 2 in the Deep Dish Mystery Series by Mindy Quigley, which I haven't had a chance to read yet. The description to this book really excited me and so I'm looking forward to checking out book 1 and book 2 in 2023. I mean, it takes place in a Wisconsin Pizzeria! And pizza is my favorite food group so I'm sure I'm going to love it.

In Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust,  our main character is Delilah O'Leary, and it says she is a newly single pizzeria owner. Her town is having a Taste of Wisconsin culinary contest and she and her employees at the pizza shop are working hard to win the contest. But across town, Delilah's ex fiance and his new girlfriend are also working hard to win, at the juice shop they work at.

When a customer at the juice shop is poisoned by a smoothie, everyone looks at Delilah because they know that she has some beef with the juice shop. Delilah must work to clear her name as well as keep her business up and running!

10.  A Cryptic Clue by Victoria Gilbert

July 11, 2023

Jane Hunter is a retired library who is looking for something to do. Retirment wasn't exactly her choice. So when Cameron "Cam" Clewe hires her to be his archivist for his many collections, Jane is thrilled to have a job and purpose. His latest addition to his collection is a group of items related to classic mystery and detective authors. But when a body is found in Cam's library and it just so happenes to be a former lover, he is the main suspect for the crime.

Cam is a bit of an eccentric and as it turns out, he's going to need Jane for more than he originally hired her for. With his intelligence and her skills from years as a  university librarian, the two must work together to figure out what happened. Jane wants to help her new boss, but she also must figure out if he is truly innocent or not.

This one sounds so fascinating and I can't wait for it to come out in July,
