I got a Bonus! Now what?

2020 was a crazy year for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was the coronavirus. It made business unpredictable and affected the economy negatively. But since I was lucky enough to be able to keep working during the quarantine time, I didn't think too much of it.

I just kept my head down and focused on my work tasks.

I work in the home insurance industry and as a whole, I wasn't sure how our company was doing. While everyone at our company was able to keep working and keep doing their work, I wasn't sure if people were buying homes like they had been. I mean, I had a friend who bought a house last Spring and she wasn't even allowed to go into it until her final walkthrough. All of her viewings of the house had been over Zoom.

But apparently things were ok, because we still got bonuses this year. We only get them on years that the company does well so that means they must have done ok!

I don't know the specifics or the exact amount because the way that it's calculated is that it's a certain percentage of my paycheck. And at this point it hasn't hit my bank account yet. But by my approximation, it should be around $1,000.

How cool, right?

I have four goals for my bonus

1. Put $500 toward debt payment (Credit Card #1)

2. Invest $50 in stocks (Through Robinhood, probably)

3. Move $450 to my savings account

4. Anything else will be added towards my checking account to go toward living expenses: groceries, home necessities, or appointments (Hazel has grooming coming up and she's also going to be getting her annual shots this coming February).

Have you every gotten a bonus at work? I can't help but think how lucky I am. In December my boyfriend and I watched Christmas Vacation (One of our favorite Christmas movies, for sure) and I always think of Clark and his Christmas Eve Meltdown when he gets his jelly of the month club bonus.

I mean, jelly is good. But it's no swimming pool.

I never want to take this for granted. A bonus is never guaranteed, so I'm determined to use this additional money to make my life better and help further my financial goals that I set for myself this year.
